Baseball Digest

This is an editorial redesign for Baseball Digest magazine, America’s oldest baseball magazine still in production. I envision a baseball magazine that offers authenticity as the integral connection between a clean take on sports design and baseball culture. As part of the magazine’s new identity design, a new logo (monogram + logotype) as well as posters and merchandise were also designed.

Since 1942, Baseball Digest has highlighted the legacy of the sport. Baseball’s growing fanbase has turned it into a global phenomenon, making the opportunity to refresh the editorial more important than ever. The design strategy is to expand the curation of exciting content, while staying true to fans. By refreshing and broadening its content, the magazine would benefit from an expanded audience / fanbase(s). The magazine prototype is resized to be slightly larger, representing its brand mission to resonate with a broader audience.

The theme of the relaunch issue is “How the game has changed.” To help voice the magazines new tone, content is intended to be a lot more personable. The magazines front matter chooses to use an opening sequence of MLB’s in season highlights. Strategic layouts are utilized differently based on the type of content within each of the magazines features. The prototypes comprehensive content focuses on 3 key aspects—traditions, competition, and community—often omitted by current publications.

Final takeaway on this project is that the over all feeling is clean, bold, sophisticated, modern—yet nostalgic. Finish size: 8.5″x11″; Cover: Sand-Matte Lamination + Raised Spot UV; Pages: #60 Uline Newsprint. Printed and bound in Los Angeles, California by Nonstop Printing, Inc.
